I didn't lose my faith. I lost my certainty, and found Jesus underneath it.

I spent decades as a pastor in the institutional church. Serving as a Lead Pastor of a multisite megachurch allowed me to see it all behind the scenes. I eventually had to admit that much of what we were calling faith was really fear wearing fancy clothes. Walking that out in public, and helping other people walk it out, became the work.

Now I write and speak for people in the in-between: the ones who still talk to Jesus but tend to flinch when someone says "church." My book, The Edge of the Inside, borrows Richard Rohr's phrase for the place I've come to love. Close enough to the tradition to be shaped by it, far enough out to tell the truth about it.

I host a weekly podcast, teach as an adjunct professor, and I'm about as likely to bring a good bottle of wine to a conversation about God as I am to bring a stack of theology books. In a room, I care more about leaving people with better questions than tidy answers.
